Located in North Sikkim, at the altitude of 2750 km, at about 6 hours drive from Gangtok, Lachen is a small village with a population of about 1000. The place acts as a base town to the Chopta Valley, Gurudongmar Lake, Tso Lhamu Lakes and other treks in North Sikkim. Nature paints Lachen in different hue in each season. The valley is painted with flowers during monsoons, followed by afterglow of autumn and snow white landscape of winters. Lachen monastery that offers quiet backdrop and stunning views of the landscape is the local attraction of the place. The Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary, located in the Yumthang Valley near Lachen is among the six sanctuaries of Kanchenjunga National Park. It is blessed with rich variety of fauna and is famous for having over 40 varieties of Rhododendrons.

Lachen acts as a base camp for invigorating treks to hot springs and lakes. Visit Gurudongmar Lake, located at 17800 ft, at a distance of 66 km from Lachen. It is one of the highest lakes in the world and is considered sacred by both Buddhists and Sikhs. The drive to the lake is very picturesque and passes through high alpine pastures. Tso Lamhu Lake, located at 6 km from Gurudongmar Lake, is the source of Teesta River and is only 4 km from India-China border.

The trek to Chopta Valley is one of the best trekking routes in the Himalayas. Chopta Valley is situated in North Sikkim and Uttarakhand and is criss-crossed by meandering rivers. The valley is famous for its flowers. During the months of May, June and July, the whole valley is covered with a variety of flowers.
